Look for something with an adjustable height foresight, ideally 22mm or 30mm.

Don't forget Grunig. I took out my first Grunig TR from '87 recently (the old round action) and it toally nailed the 600 V. They aren't 'fashionable' so bargains can be had, and unlike Swing you can still get new parts from the manufacturer (without ordering from a different contintent or ITAR issues etc). .

I wouldn't worry too much about the barrel - the rifle only truly becomes yours once you have re-barreled, and barrel counts are often vague, inaccurate, conservative, and even if accurate doesn't really tell you what life is left. Main concern is a stock you can be confortable with and good sights & trigger. I wouldn't choose Musgrave myself, but I'm sure they can still shoot well.

If it needs rebarelling is it simply a case of finding someone appropriately licenced to do it for you? Will the new barrel have the same serial number as the old one or would you need a variation?

Another issue is the trigger...........my Swing has a Davies faux 2 -stage which is very crisp. The original Swing trigger (a true 2-stage) is also very good but has a fixed blade position which for me is impossible to use.

I wouldn't dismiss a Musgrave. I have one with a 6BR barrel. There's a certain charm in the Mauser type action, it's very smooth. Once again, it has a Davies trigger.

I quite like Mauser based action having built many a sporting rifle for clients with them and I use a Mayfair engineering Mauser action in my stalking rifle.

No variation if it’s the same chambering and no serial number need on a barrel in Britain

Mayfair Engineering? Do they make a Mauser action? I asked Musgrave about a single shot target action a couple of years ago.
They said they "might" re-introduce it, but no immediate plans.

Mayfair do a beautiful Mauser 98 action precision made as used by the best English gun makers Purdey H&H and Westley Richards to name a few. They can scale it to long short or magnum so suspect they could leave out the magazine port to make a single shot.
