I was told some time back that a certain UK company has some sort of patent to stop any commercial copies .
Not sure how true it is , so I wont name the company .

Ok, I'm slightly confused, if you put a Section 1 firearm inside an airsoft body is still a realistic imitation firearm ? I ask because of you not wanting to paint it until you had your airsoft membership thingy.

Huge grey area it seems!
See this thread, at the end of the day for the sake of £25 I figured it wasn’t worth being a test case!

Right, finally picked this project back up!
Spent a few hours modelling the trigger box so I could print one out, then made a few different versions in an attempt to get the system to interface with standard black dog M4 magazines but there just isn’t enough room for the mag to work also leaving the ejector in place (ejector not extractor) and the whole thing being strong enough.
It looked like 15-22 mags might work, but they sit a bit too far into the chassis to work
So I think the way I’m going to go is to design and print an insert that slots into the airsoft metal magazine shell, which is slightly shorter than a standard mag, and then uses the standard 597 magazine design.
I might still use the 3d printed trigger box because I can make it slightly shorter which means the whole thing sits together nicer in the chassis

One step forward two steps back
Got my custom trigger box up and running so it just needs an insert for the airsoft magazine to hold the 597 mag now
However went to test the feeding and found the 597 has crapped the extractor out somewhere, apparently a common issue but of course unknown to me until it happened! Obviously no one in the UK has spares except for brownells *shudder*

I really need to get round to doing this to my l86. my plan is to buy a cheap semi auto tube fed gun. but if I can get it running using the m4 style mags that would be cool. so may have to look at the 597 or similar. shame the 10/22 is a no go, I have one of those, although I think the barrel shape is wrong for what you want.

Thanks guys, my VQ extractors arrived today and I’m
Hoping I can print the plunger so should be able to carry on again shortly!
Mag design is in progress, I’m hoping to be able to print something 25rnd ish which will slot into the airsoft magazine shell for a bit of realism
I’ve managed to get a second airsoft shell as well (a star one this time) so I might make a couple.

Don’t write the 10/22 off fully, but it didn’t do it for me.
Plus points of the 597 are
1- although the mags are crap, they fit in the magwell
2- the trigger box was very easy to tap for a direct trigger linkage. My HTA 90/22 for example uses a bar to push the trigger which is a bit rubbish
3- I think the 10/22 receiver was a bit wide, but I don’t recall now
