I try to avoid 12,7x99 as it is no fun after a few shots and costs a fortune to send rounds down range. I cannot think of a 6,5 that is not accurate and 7,62x51/.308 gives you a huge choice with ammunition available everywhere.
Have you considered .223? Certainly good to 600m and will not break the bank either.
