There's a good empirical analysis (obtained with a hacksaw) in the
Spring 2006 Journal [page 58]. The findings suggest that over the range 23" to 29" the effect on a 155 gr .308 was circa 13 fps/inch and for a 200gr bullet it was approx 10 fps/inch.

Thanks for posting the link Rox. I skimmed ithe article fairly quickly and will read it later. I did notice Mike was using some fairly stout loads during his testing.

Well, Darrel got beat in 600 yds benchrest this weekend by a true 'factory' rifle - Sean Broxham shooting a Savage 6.5-284
