Not sure you are right, that ring he is wearing is ornately detailed on the side, it is turned slightly on his finger as if it is too big for him. Looks like a small stone in the middle of the ring. My guess would be a girl friend's ring?

Some of the veteran rings can be very ornate and have stones added. But as you say, a girlfriends ring, possibly, considering the finger it is on....
But, if it is his GF's, how big were her hands?!!!!

They are solid as well, just like the ones SimG posted a link to.
The one he is wearing is not solid. I am not educated within the ring world for men at that time but to me it does look like an odd design ring to wear...

Impressive picture.
A charge of 60,000 lbs (26.8 tons) of Ammonal explosive was blown at 7.28am resulting in a crater 90 feet deep and 300 feet across.
Impressive stats...
