Welcome Shugie. You'll not far wrong with a Marlin although consider the 44 as it makes a bigger hole and that can often make a big difference in your point score.

The Howa is a good choice although be warned, if this full bore bug really gets a grip of you, your options for tarting it up are a little more restricted with the Howa.

At Bisley you have a choice.

Army Rifle Association, mostly ex service mainly target rifle

Surrey Rifle Association, frequented by younger shooters, most Universities affilliate there, again, mainly TR.

North London, mainly TR and Match Rifle.

Ibis, TR

City RIfle Club (my club) mainly TR (but I'm hoping to alter that)

London Middlesex RA. Open all year, mainly TR. Usually have a target bookable by the hour on Wednesdays and at week-ends.

Artists Rifle Club. All disciplines, usually a rifle target every Wednesday and some week-ends

There are others but not usually active outside the 'season'

Then of course the NRA. They have the NRA shooting club which meets mid week and at week ends. They change the days so that shift workers get a fair crack.

My honest advice, as you live close to Bisley, would be to join the NRA then you can book a target in your own right rather than have a club book it on your behalf.

There is also a 'season ticket' available which will give you 25% discount on target bookings.

Season ticket? Can you tell us more about that John?

Sixty five pounds for the ticket, valid for one year from date of purchase.

I haven't worked it out exactly but about once a week gets yer money back.

I shall be using mine this afternoon at Melville probably.

Thanks for that lot, I shall look into the various clubs you mention. I know you can join the NRA and hire targets, I intend to do that, but doubt time will permit effective use of a season ticket. Bay 'A' in Melville looks reasonably cheap, the longer ranges less so for single person use.

On Sunday, when were in, I think, bay 'C' there was a club next to us using the turning targets, quite a group, the targets all turned at the same time, and a volley ensued. This was repeated a number of times. What is this arrangement?

A number of competitions involve timed exposures ( of the target - silly) and several competitors shoot alongside each other.

Yes, a single target on Century, Stickledown etc. are expensive for single use, but the NRA run, mainly at week ends, what is known as a Ramge Office Target, which is bookable by the hour.

There is also the NRA Shooting Club, which meets regularly, and the option of sharing, hence the Forum Fungunners.

If it rains on Thursday like it is here at the moment, there will be space at 600x!
