I always advise new shooters at Diggle to look out for a secondhand 308 Remington PSS or VSS. Not only can you shoot this rifle almost every week in our various comps. but, when you decide to specialise, you will usually get your money back on the Remmy.

WE'd recommend the Howa 1500 in 6.5x55 Swedish too if you want a modern bankstick, or a 6.5x55 Swedish Mauser or a P14 if you want lower cost, far more classy* alternatives.

If so then I am hoping to be up in the next week or so when I get my referee to sign.

If i set on a rem 700, the next step is a scope (or glass as I have seen it put), any recommendations that arn't extremely pricey?

Scope - pop into Foxys shop at Diggle. His own brand scope will see you up and running for just over one hundred of your English pounds.

At the price Brian Fox sells his 'scopes for I doubt you will find a better deal anywhere in the UK. In fact you wont.

Vince is giving good advice. I started with a .308 Remmy VSSF for all ranges from 100yds up to 1000yds. The rifle gave very good results at 1000yds in benchrest although it had a bit of a kick as I was reloading using the Sierra 190 grain. To ensure I got enough elevation I put on a 20 degree taper scope mounts to enable me to 'get on' at the longest distance, as it is quite common to see visitors not having enough elevation on their scopes, hence the taper mounts. From 100yd zero I had to come up about 38 moa to get on at 1000yds.

I was doing a bit of research and its coming up with various magnifications and specs for up to 1000 yds. so i tjink best bet as a few of you have states is the little treasure trove of Brians shop .

With regards to a bipod, any recommendations? I have used the harris bipod in the past and was happy with its function when i used the AICS in my airsoft says and thinking of a rem in the AICS stock with a harris bipod

I need to declare an interest and say right now I build bipods however regardless of that choose something wide that works with the AICS stock. The wider you go the more you tame the muzzle hop, ideally a minimum of 500-600,0mm wide. Also take a good look at your all up weight as you may fancy entering the odd local F/TR comp or two and you will be restricted to 8.25Kgs

Yes - same Vince.

As a few have already advised - Foxy's cheap n' cheerful 8-32 Chinese scopes are very serviceable as a first buy at £105. When you can afford something better, it's always there as a spare.
