As a kid the three common ones around our way were the Tortoiseshell, Red Admiral and the Painted Lady. We had lots of other types but I never really learnt the names and even to this day identification is a guess at best.

Can't remember when I last saw a Red Admiral ...think my Dad pointed one out to me down the common once when a young kid...unfortunately, the common now has a by-pass going thru it.

According the the Butterfly Conservation web site the Red Admiral numbers have increased and they can be seen all over the UK from about July onwards.

I took this picture in Port Isaac, a few yards From Doc Martin's house.

Not exactly my garden but found here at the range in Denmark in abundance, they are purple and white and just lovely!
