Generally speaking, the heavier the rifle, the lesser the recoil.
However do not forget that various competitions have weight limits.

It's a three day event, Fri-Sun if that helps at all.

If I was starting out I would look at the Tikka T3 range if cost is an issue.
There are some nice looking rifles like the new TAC model.
http://uk.search.yahoo.com/r/_ylt=A7x9Q ... .tikka.fi/
A 24 inch barrel in 6.5 x 55 Swedish would be pretty good for distance.
The trouble is most of them are special order 6 to 9 months!

Thanks Tony, I'll have a nosey at the Tikka, I must admit I don't like to follow the crowd if I can help it so I'm moving away from the Remingtons.

No need to buy new there are many fine second hand rifles out there saving you money for good glass, sights whatever.

Bernie,

I have a Tikka T3 "Tactical" you can try at BGC albeit in .223.

Personal experience would say avoid buying anything from Haliwell Road, Derek at Simply is a better bet or buy second hand from Gunstar or Guntrader if you know what you are looking at.

Hi stuck,

I'll take you up on that offer. I am planning to have my first visit on 2nd March.
As for Haliwell Road .. .. ..
I'm thinking of going for a .260, is that a good direction to go?

260 is a top cartridge. It is more than capable of 1000yds and should be good for 1200.
As I have an AI AE in 260 I am biased!

You would have to reload or get some one like HPS to make it for you.

I've never fired one Bernie but believe it is a good caliber.

Don't forget though if you want to start shooting F Class comps that will put you into the F Open class with the "Big" boys :55:
