Could be true, they were buying empty cases during the hand in. The US Navy (Holy Loch) at the time used our Pistol Range and kindly didn't take away their empties, needless to say we collected them. Well come the hand in a couple of us had built up a very large quantity of 45ACP brass which we promptly presented to the Cops, they were a bit pi$$ed but gave us the benefit of the doubt as to the quantity and didn't bother counting them.
They paid out on lots of stuff like reloading gear, ammo, scopes and even holsters and belts. They were giving £100 minimum for scopes, a cheap airgun scope could be bought for £15 at the time and quite a few of us purchased a sizeable quantity.
BTW Know at least one Guy who filled rounds with Bullseye before he handed them in, I'm sure they would be destroyed anyway.
I believe before everyone migrated from the other forum to here, someone mentioned getting a 30/30 underlever and a holiday in Cyprus with their hand in money so that would if it was them and their kids imply a good few thousand pounds even in 1997.

I think the ban was a mistake - only the criminals now have proper handguns here and I would love the opportunity to shoot CF pistol again - but I have never heard anyone say they were short changed by the compensation.
No, there was no "D notice" per se, but several of us pursued the answer for a long time. My own MP at the time, RT Hon Anne Widdecombe told me that the final figure would be difficult to come to as the compensation was paid over three financial years. £1 to £1.5 Billion was the agreed guesstimate.
Personally, I made a barrow load of money! Not far off five figures. Other guys in my club made a lot more than me. One bloke, whose compensation "invoice" was pinned to the board at Stone Lodge ranges in Dartford, got £21K in brass alone! I remember it vividly, 212000 cases.

I'm sorry for your losses.
I've always wondered how much compensation you got, for example, if you had a normal Series 70 Colt 1911, how much compensation would you of got for that gun? What about something a little more exotic, like a Les Baer? Would the government say, that's just a 1911, here's the same amount as for the Colt?

I know of one person who still has their handguns (but no ammunition for them) after writing a nice letter to the Home Office......

An old friend of mine worked at MOD Donnington for years and he once told me that a lot of handed-in handguns and semi-auto rifles from the previous ban ended up there for storage in the event they were ever required in the future (national emergency?) and are apparently still there.
I don't know if it is true or not but just retelling what I was told
