No, if it is an existing empty slot then you can vary it at any time.
You only pay for extra slots as they should come out and re-examine your security.

Your licencing authority will probably accept a slot for a black powder revolver (BPR) as a ".44/.45" rather than just ".44" OR a ".45", certainly Northants do. Some of the Ruger Old Army BPR are listed as .44 and others as .45 but they are exactly the same caliber revolver. It will allow you to be less fussy when you find the right one.
I know you get a better site radius on the 7.5" Ruger Old Army (ROA), but I have my heart set on a stainless 5.5" ROA with the ivory imitation grips. It looks absolutely stunning IMO.

Quick question:-
I thought one4one variation was free ( or so I was told ) but just checked on the Cambridgeshire Firearms Licencing website and it doesnt differentiate between types of variation and specifies a fee of Ā£26.
Do I ignore this and just dont send a cheque?

I'll still settle for the muzzle loading version...

I just bought a Ruger old army, fantastic tool. I also have the spares cylinder on my ticket so I can now get a nitro proof so I can use it indoors. Kershaw Engineering do it.

Well, I've finally got my certificate back.. and it still has the .45LC Rifle and Ammo on it ( which was supposed to be one side of the one4one ) plus the additional .45 Muzzle loading Revolver.
Can't argue too much I suppose as I've gained an extra slot.
Roll on Wednesday evening, when I pick up the Ruger....
I suppose I could ask the RFD to sell me a .45LC Rifle while I'm picking up the ROA and sell it back to him before I leave....
