Don't discount the GSG 522 if you want a fun and reliable rifle. I have the SD version with the sliding stock and the fake suppressor.

So far i've shot CCI subs, CCI standard and the it's usual diet of CCI Blazer with no issues at all. It feels like a proper MP5 with the metal construction and the whole bolt unit can be removed for cleaning.

Local RFD has them for £299 at the mo.

I'm not sure they are made any more, Walter have a licensed mp5 series now that is very well regarded.

They are still in the Edgar Bros catalogue and plenty in my local although I did hear a rumour from over the pond that GSG were planning to stop production at some point.

Oh! I'm misinformed then. I was told H&K saw their arse about the unlicensed clones when they have Walther/Umarex the production license for rimfire.

Rumours eh. Apologies!

You're not misinformed. The GSG-5 model came out first and was a virtual identical copy of the MP5 (some minor differences on the lower receiver markings). H&K successfully sued GSG and then had to alter the gun enough that it wouldn't be considered a copyright infringement, and the GSG 522 was born. Its got more receiver differences and the iconic H&K sights have been replaced.

Although the licensed Walther/UMarex MP5 is 40% more expensive than the 522, i'd pay it as, IMO, is a much nicer and reliable gun (my GSG-5 was ammo fussy and HAD to be kept clean). However, i'd be tempted by the GSG gun for that price as a 'sub-machine gun' .22 on the side of an AR-15 style rifle if thats what i was primarily after.

Lantac-fettled new CMMG .. I would agree that's the best approach for a quality AR at a good price, just better all round really, build, resale price, use the lower for a .223 etc etc.

Neal at Suffolk Rifles is also doing some lovely AR builds using quality components too, its all down to what you want to spend really.

When I was after a tactical .22 I watched all the reviews and handled everything they had in McAvoy's (I think it was around 8-9 models in the rack). I kept going back to the one on my short-list and I am now the very happy owner of a Sig 522 Swat.

^ can't argue with that. I'm thinking of picking another up to leave a scope mounted alongside my current iron sights only one. For the money, if you shop around, they are simply awesome.
