Yeah, but those bullets that they give to soldiers are super lethal. It would be irresponsible to allow the general public to use them to improve their target shooting ability!

Is Match nothing more than the stuff from the Tenex line that didn't pass that QC? Or is that bollox I heard...?

It's all dependant on the Batch Number.

Match does have it's own product code - which is somewhat an indicator of how the ammunition was gauged by the QC, proofing and Test firing Group sizing. However, it is not uncommon to get a box of Match which has Tenex level ammunition contained.



The first 2 characters denote the product code, 10 is understandably Tenex (I believe Match product code is 11) but here you can see Tenex level ammo within a Match box. As I've found, occasionally, you can be lucky enough to come across Team that has a 10 Product code, so essentially Tenex in a Team or Match box.

With all of this though, You can have a batch of Tenex that your rifle doesn't like, so even though it's got the product code it doesn't mean it'll shoot as well as some Tenex can in your rifle.

I'd guess all of this is the same for the round bullet line (sport, club, etc) They come off the same line, but you're paying for QC, tolerances and performance in the proof range with various levels of ammo. With the higher levels of ammo you're guaranteed a batch of that level, with the lower levels, you might get high level, you might get something lower.

Digressing slightly, I always thought RG green spot was the start of the run on new machinery and destined to be used by military marksmen (This is well documented) Apparently the answer is no it was not. Green Spot had a different projectile and was more likely to be used for target shooting. This is from the horses mouth on Friday.

It has been my experience that Eley ammunition can vary in quality no matter what version/colour the box is that it comes in. Some of their ammunition can be disappointing and some can be surprisingly good.
I was once given two 100 round boxes of their standard military training ammunition, the stuff in the square buff coloured cardboard boxes, and wasn't expecting accuracy to be anything great. It turned out to be some of the most accurate .22 ammunition that I have ever shot, even better than some of the Tennex that I have used.

Did we mention sorting? The best 10 shot 50m/55 yard group I have shot was with a box of Eley Contact, it contained 43 'sorted' rounds which had been individually weighed and visually inspected with 7 discarded. They were not re-sized. They shot noticeably better than anything else I have shot so far.

So ultimately the question is; is Eley that good? From experiences expressed it appears not. Or, in the scope of rimfire ammo, this is to be expected with "top notch" fodder?

Look at who uses what in the Olympics and other international games.
This will answer your question.
It is also worth mentioning that most of Eleys competitiors are also licensees---they use the Eley Prime system and in some cases Eley machinery.

I dont know if they still do it but 'Eley' used to say they would give you 5000 rounds free if you found and proved on their range that another manufacturer rounds were more accurate than their 'Tenex'. ( they would not say that unless it was a sure bet.)
