How did the spring fair with the heat of the weld?

Absolutely fine, it was done in a vice, so that absorbed all of the heat, no difference at all all in the tension

However on something similar and if recommended I will start a different thread.

I need to make a make a Hand spring for another Pinfire that I have, the friend who welded the Hand has given me a length of TIG rod, carbon steel and told me to hammer it as flat as I can, then file it as much as I can, then heat it until red and let it cool completely, repeat until until I get the desired strength, or lack of it

Does that make sense?

The hand spring is a thin strip and usually has very little tension - I would be looking around for a thin strip of spring steel from something like an old post office relay or electrical contacts and even a razor blade ground down to a thin strip - How about a strip of a feeler gauge. A set of feelers costs just a couple of quid at a discount store and comes in finely graduated thicknesses.

What a a fantastic suggestion, I have a set of feeler gauges sitting in a jam jar of diesel from 40 years ago when my father's garage roof leaked, my daughter is living in the house now, I wonder if that jar is still there on one of the many shelves in that garage ??????
