Re: NRA Journal

#31 Post by Steve E »

My Journal arrived in the post today. I was most dissapointed. I think that Cheeky has summed it up perfectly. As being on the losing England :flag5: team in the National, I was hoping for a decent writeup. The journal is lacking on its in depth coverage of the Imperial- something that a great many Target rifle, match rifle and schools shooters look forward to seeing. The type face that has been used is appalling, very difficult read and the white on coloured backgrounds is not good.
The only good thing is more varied articles but even they were not in depth. I felt that the gun cleaning article was about selling the products advertised on the facing page.
I hope that the next edition is better but I think that this edition is a comic that does not give a proper record of the NRA that the old Journal did.

The person I feel most sorry for is the person who told me he used to read it on the loo - sometimes he would get three months of toilet entertainment out of it!

Unfortunately now after one serious dose of constipation he'll have to buy another magazine! sign01

Spelling mistakes and leaving important events out aside, certainly serious enough mistakes, I simply do not like the glossy "Marvel Comics" look it has.
Something about not being environmentally friendly springs to mind. Please correct me if I am wrong, could be the printers nowadays can make it look that glossy without compromising on the environmental impact?

Too many adds. Way too many adds.

It is all we have though and I really think spreading the word about contributing is key, if shooters do not then it may never improve.

BTW forum mention is on page 11 if anyone missed it

I'm sort of OK with it. I think it needs some of the detail of the old journal but with the open style and the adverts of the new. I don't buy any other shooting mags so this is auseful way of seeing what stuff I might want to buy.

Email sent this afternoon

:
I found it difficult to read the articles in 'yellow' on red.

A number of friends have made similar comments.

If I write an article on case preparation, will you give me a full page advert too?

Looking forward to some improvements please

As Matt and others have remarked, I found the new format pleasing enough on the eye, but very light on content (besides adverts).

Whilst the shooters of various non-TR disciplines may welcome having a less TR-centered content, the reality is that the NRA Imperial Meeting is the largest annual shooting event of fullbore rifles anywhere in the world (I don't believe the US National matches at Camp Perry are larger, but I am happy to be corrected). The write-up on the Imperial Meeting, (which I might add certainly includes the largest Match Rifle event anywhere), was not simply light on content, it was barely worth a read. As Matt said, nothing on the team matches, which most certainly should have included the Scottish double of the Elcho and National for the second year running.

If an event of the magnitude of the Imperial Meeting is worthy of so little coverage, I worry about what future issues will be like.

Well it might have something to do with the fact that we've also read the Imperial Meeting "report" before.

50% was the website daily diary for Saturday afternoon and 50% was the "What is the Imperial?" factsheet also on the website and featured in the Spring 2011 Journal!

I and the two authors (Iain and Tony DL - neither of whom were asked) are seriously unimpressed!
