I really like the look of the smith having just had the chance to handle one.

I think the only thing that really irks me is when I googled them I got some US hits - price there around $400 (about £255), price here around the £600 mark...

That's just the way it is. By the time the importer pays export license fee, freight, import duty, vat, freight forwarder costs, proof house costs and a bit on top for profit it adds up.

600 quid does seem steep but it's a little more than half what the "competition" is.. And you won't be paying out even more to have the "competition" fettled in order to make it work....

Imagine spending 1200 quid and the thing was more unreliable than Yodel deliveries...!!!

Just remember our importers are paying wholesale costs and not the retail prices that we see online or when we're salivating in the US gun shops on holiday. As we're a smaller market they need to earn more per unit. Which they do.

Yup, all good reasons I know, but none address the fundamental issue of "I want one now" versus the more controversial "I can't afford it now, but could probably convince myself the credit card could run to it if it were just a bit less"

Doesn't help that the shop where I got to fondle said 15-22 have also informed me of a local PSG/mini-rifle venue where it could be best enjoyed...

I'll pay attention to that area though, thanks for the info. I'm planning on cleaning mine every 500 rounds which is about once a month for me. I've had a look at the build up of crud and brass shavings and that seems about right for me. Incidentally, cleaning the lower on an AR15 (or even an L85 for that matter) always struck me as awkward, and seeing as I have an air compressor - I bought an air gun - the type that literally just blows air out, I use that to blow all the dry crud out first - makes cleaning it out much quicker for me needing less solvent and less crap left behind.[/quote]

+1 for using an air compressor- makes getting rid of all the bits super easy- i find it particularly useful on my ruger 10/22. To be fair anything that needs cleaning the air compressor seems to get used.
