Re: Old bike pics anyone?
Hi
Thanks for some nice photos and memories. Not bee to Oliver's mount since 89 when I last raced it. I think it was called Cock of the north.
I rode, as passenger on my first bike (A10) when I was two days old. My Father took me round to see his mum! So I have a lot of pics, of old bikes for you. Ever since I was about 14 I've had my own bike and right now I'm sitting in my workshop full of bikes. Its something that I'll always do and love. I try a scan a few old pics but for now here's a couple from my last trips, I try a do one trip a year on my R1100gs. Had a GS since they first came out when it was just a R80gs.
We done 14 countries in 14 days in eastern europe. 2010 This was in Croatia

Morocco, I just love riding in the Sahara 2009

Vid of Morocco
I was meant to be off to Libya next week but can't see that happening now.
Pete

I did not realise you were a GS rider Pete, I sold an R80 with 125k plus miles on it and shortly afterwards we had our first GS, an 1150 Adventure that took us around Denmark and Europe including some huge daily dashes which involved fuelling three times a day. Long distance riding is one of the most addictive activities I have ever experienced.

No idea where these were, Catalunya/Andalucia area is my guess. I remember the first one, it was so hot and windy, we were constantly buffeted by a side wind and temperatures were in the mid 40's, the idea is stop, drink as much water as you can, pour the rest over your head and start riding again. We rode for hours on end always on our own just piling on the miles for 14/15 hours at a time.
Second one is a Viking special, she sits on the back and sings, takes pictures and babbles for the world. We can get on a bike at 07:00 and still be talking like long lost friends as it starts to get dark. We also loop an MP3 player for distraction.
I eventually binned the ADV one evening and Christel did the honourable thing and protected the pannier with her ankle. She was no longer able to ride pillion so the ADV went and I ended up with a HP2 in SM trim for a while until she was ready to come on the back again. HP2's are of no practical use to man nor beast, the tank range was marginally over 100 miles and the bike was bio degradable...
So cue so more swapping around and I ended up with a So I got a G450X (Not being one to learn) Eventually I was given an r1200R which had just had it's first service whilst my G450X was being fixed. Time for the Viking to get out on a bike again, we went tried it and both said wow!
So these days an R1200R is my only 'proper' motorbike. Only mods are a couple of hand guards and a small fly screen to move the wind a bit higher, it takes me to work most days and the two of use where ever we want. Odd how things change.

I need to dig out some pics of the older things, until then the HP2:

That is muck from my commute, I preferred it as a big SM and it never actually went off road.

Cock of the North races it was, and some big names used to race there. I'm not into watching racing now preferring to to do rallies and ride outs.
My last trip back from Scarborough involved a tow job after i seized up my brothers old RD400 on the way home, he was not amused!
I had a bit more hair then.....

Ovenpaa you must be in the Iron butt club. I've only done that twice, you need a big tank. Love HP2s but not yet owned one.
JJVC I think I raced against Steve Parish and Nick Jefferies as well as many others there. It was just after the IoM and I thought it would be easy but thats a mans track.

Re: Old bike pics anyone?
I think the Adventure held just over 31 litres and we have filled it three times a day in the past. Partly due to the lack of petrol stations but also because we were running out of fuel. I have not done an official IB run, it never appealed to me, I cannot ride for the sake of it, I need to be going somewhere for a reason if that makes sense.
Last time at Olivers Mount for me was to watch the likes of Read and Agostini doing parade laps, Barry was there as well. RIP. It is a bloody impressive circuit so huge respect to anyone that can get round it quickly... I do like circuits where you feel compelled to lean back off the fence as people race past

Adventure tanks are 31 ltrs I have one on my 1100. I think your in the iron butt club unofficially. 3x31ltrs = over 1000miles. The only times I done it I had to get home quick and was over 1000miles away.
Re: Old bike pics anyone?
Hardest trip for us was actually in a car, driving from Bedford to North Jutland in one hit in a Ford KA at the very start of January in maybe 2001, bloody cold it was as well! Last 200ish miles was in freezing fog.
We picked the dog up an headed home 2-3 day later, I remember trying to grab some sleep at 02:00 ish just off the motorway in Germany in way below zero conditions, the car got cold in seconds.

Re: Old bike pics anyone?
As Ovenpaa has said, going long distance is just very addictive.
Best holidays of my life, sitting behind Ovenpaa on our big bike and the landscape just rolling by.
Smells of gorse and rape and over the intercom trying to solve the world problems and what to have for dinner that day.
Nothing beats that:)
