"If people are happy with using an android phone I could design it to be programmed and activated via an app over Bluetooth. Wi-Fi is another option if I could setup a simple web server on the arduino"
I haven't a clue what any of that means, the system needs to be simple to operate, what the feck is an android phone, app, bluetooth wifi got to do with it? I though we were getting a targetry system not an interstellar something or other.
All I want is an off on button that is remotely controlled from behind the firing point like the box I had when I used fly radio control airplanes.
When does everything have to become so fecking complicated?

Agreed; it doesn't need to be complicated - just a simple operating transmitter - the one we use for turning targets at my club is a box with a basic keypad on it...program in the number of exposures, the 'edge' time, the 'face' time and press start...

The on/off button would be simple Adam, don't fret.
I just like to build extra functionality into things so I'm forced to learn something :-)

Can't you just keep things simple and pull strings?

Interest here at that price range.

i think the ability to alter the program would be good. but basic operation needs to follow the KISS principle.
no need for the added cost of wifi, or bluetooth. how likely is it that you need to reprogram from a distance? as you would need to approach it to reset it anyway. i think a simple start RF controller to trigger the sequence, maybe set rough parameters, like the face time. or amount of exposures would be a benefit. but for anything more, i think it should be done while at the unit to try to keep the overall costs down
hey, you could always go for a deluxe version later once you have the concept up and going, that allows the all singing dancing wifi android app actuated dream to shine? it just has a higher price tag

Bear in mind that most phones are class 2 bluetooth devices.

You would need a class 1 device (100m range) to be useful. Class 2 devices have an effective range of about 10m.
