Does anyone have any suggestions as to where I can get some scrap lead from in the Hants/Surrey area? I'm currently using range scrap but I'd like to get some pure lead as I'm only moulding 12g slug at the moment and pure lead is recommended for the Lee 1oz slug mould.

I guess I need to find a scrap metal dealer somewhere that will sell me some but I don't have the first idea where to start. I had a look in the yellow pages but all the places listed in there looked like big commercial recyclers. I doubt these guys would be particularly interested in selling me 50 kilos of scrap.

Scrappies are usually a good bet especially if you can pay cash and take stuff of them regularly. However you can't certain of what you are getting.

For soft lead I usually buy lead roof flashing from B&Q and such like places. It pays to wade through the rolls as you often find some at a cheaper price as it was taken into stock when the market price was low. The B&Q stuff usually comes out at BHN 6 which isn't a kick in the arse off pure lead.

I get mine from a large plumbing company, apparently they always have bits lying around, another good source is roofing companies as they use lead for flashing.

Reminds me of an article I read about a Church that lost the lead of its roof a couple of times so they had it replaced with zinc which was great until the first time it rained heavily, it didn't leak but the noise all but 'drowned' out the congregations singing...

Seawolf got some from Ebay and apparently it was very cheap, even the postage was inexpensive!

A year or so ago when scrap metal prices were very high I came round a corner one dark morning (Motorbike!) and spotted a dark section on the road, as luck had it I managed to avoid it and glancing down realised it was a large square hole where a cast man hole cover had been the evening before, it was at least a couple of feet square and the hole would have destroyed the suspension of any unsuspecting car or motorbike that went into it.

Idiotic behaviour and it must have taken a small crane to lift it as well.

In the 80s pikies had all the steel manhole covers off all the roads in Baglan IE.

We welded down the replacements.

I'm a right girly when it comes to heights so I won't be sourcing my lead fresh from the roof.

Dromina, how much do you thinks it works out per-kilo approximately if you buy the lead roll?

Last time I looked it was around £5.50 a kilo. Just looked on b*****dbay and there is a guy selling diving shot at £4.70 a kilo delivered.

£5.50, ouch! I will have to see if I can source some scrap from somewhere. That's way more than I wanted to pay. With slugs weighing 1oz each they'd cost nearly 16p each just for the lead.
