Max 600yds .223 or 7.62
Hi,
300-600 yd shooting is going to be my limit I think, am I right in thinking .223 for my needs ?
What sort of starter rifle make/model would get the job done ?. I wont be good enough for competition shooting in the very near future, and what sort of scope for that range. I don't want to spend a fortune at the moment, more like trying my luck and having a laugh.
The furthest I have shot full bore in the RAF was 100m !!!
Kind Regards
Chris

Oh, we think you need a Mosin Nagant in 7.62x54R
Cheap ammo, robust rifle and bags of fun ! What more could you need ?

I like the look of the Enfield's, can you still get them in 7.62 ?
Shot one a good few years ago, loads of style to them, but then I like the Howa 1500 as well sign01 , too many choices !

Budget is the thing, ow much you willing to spend?
You can pick up some older 7.62 Target rifles for very reasonable sums or you can pay lots & lots for a newer one.

Are you still serving? If yes, join the RAF Target Rifle Club, based at Bisley, get coached by GB team members (at least 11 including 4 current or past GB captains the last time I looked) to shoot out to 1000 yards, borrow a top-class rifle, get your travel paid and free accommodation, and go on heavily funded overseas tours to South Africa / Canada / Jersey / Australia / New Zealand.

Go for a 7.62 ,cheap nato ammo and you reload easily .A heavy barrelled No 4 Enfield will shoot consistently up 800 yds .Plenty around @£3-400 ,10 round mag scoped up ---loads of fun and very accurate with good ammo, I know -- I've got one.

Now that's the type I really really like and bottom end of the budget....That would do me fine, would I be able to fit a " normal" scope to it do you know ?meles meles wrote:Go klikky

Buy it now, along with plenty of ammo. Put in some practice, then you can think of how to justify a nice shiny new bangstick next year. By then you'll have had plenty of experience borrowing other people's guns and a firmer idea of what you really need.
