Lapua screna vs smk 2156

hi guys

have been loading some .308 ammo 155gr screna bullets and they are working well.

these bullets are getting expensive and hard to come about in local shops, i have been looking at the new plama smk that all the local places seem to stock.

my bigest problem is i am onlying using a 26" barrel and need every last bit to help me stay supersonic at the ranges.

i see the new 2156's have a pretty high BC but has anybody used them along side the lapua bullets and can give some feedback.

my ammo is made up of:

lapua .308 case
cci BR primer
TR140 powder

If you are loading to touch/into the rifling with the Scenars, you may need to make a slight adjustment to the seating depth.

I don't know which area you are in but, if cost is a consideration, you might like to try some of the 155gn Australian bullets imported by Fox Firearms (www.foxfirearmsuk.com). A relatively unknown Spanish shooter did very well with these in the European F Class Championships in 2011.

My GB team experience was that the Scenars are finicky. If you are loading just for yourself, it should be fine, but they were quite sensitive to jump. We wanted ammo that would fit in anyone's rifle, so after a lot of experiment we went for Sierra 2156s. They worked in every gun loaded to a standard length. We might have gained a bit if we had done individual matching with Scenars, but the Sierras were just fine regardless of jump, as long as it was >0.

Sierra 2156s are quite a bit slipperier than 2155s - it will make at least a minute and usually quite a bit more difference at 1000.

There's about 3moa difference in my rifle between the 2156s and the 2155s. I've never shot scenars because of their reputation for being finnicky. You might try my Pa a.k.a. "zeroveez" who I believe may have shot both out of his TR.

I load the 2156s to about 40 thou jump as this appeared to give the best results in a moderately unscientific comparison of rounds with 10, 20 and 40 thou jump. I've not tried longer (yet.)

I shoot 155 Scenars and find them quite acceptable in a fairly open 7,62x51 chamber however given the cost and popularity of the #2156 they have to be worth a look.

Are the prices that much different? Here they are 27.9p versus 28.0p. 2156 seem to disappear quickest.

Here (UK) the #2156's are GBP25.75/100 versus the Scenar's which from memory are GBP31.29/100 both inclusive of VAT so quite a difference.

I have tried Scenars in various twist barrels. Results were excellent in 10" and 12" twists. However in a 13" twist Target Rifle, although they still grouped well at 1000x in very light wind, in a strong blustery wind, they were all over the target, indicating a lack of dynamic stability.

I have only shot them in 1:12 however I would have expected the 155's to be quite stable, even more so in the 1:13

I shoot both as availability dictates. The Scenar is a better bullet if it works for you, but as has been noted it can be a pain. Also, lot to lot consistency is pretty awful - I was shooting with ENS at the weekend and showed him my test batch. 9 rounds from one box, and 1 from the later box. #10 was so different if you didn't know better you'd go with completely different bullet, not just a different lot!

The Sierras are cheap and they work for me, though not as well as the Berger. But, since the Berger is twice the price, I'll stick with the Sierra - range time is more important iMHO than the odd minute of improved wind you might get with a 155 Berger.

Still might try the 185s though!
