Good evening,

I'm looking to buy a torque wrench/driver for refitting action screws, but the bewildering range on offer is somewhat confusing. I'm prepared to part with enough hard earned to purchase a suitable tool but don't want to overspend needlessly. Any suggestions?

You have a couple of choices, either a screwdriver type torque wrench or normal type torque wrench.

Screwdriver type is easier to use in some respects but pricey and lacks the flexibility of a normal type

Normal type (If you go down this avenue look at 1/4" drive) is more cumbersome to use but can be applied to other applications)

Sporting services stock the screwdriver type but it is pricey.

Choice is really down to budget, ones without a calibration certificate are cheaper and are often as accurate. A word of advice, always back it off to zero when not in use otherwise the spring will be come compressed and will not tighten to the indicated setting.

I use a 1/4" drive Bluepoint torque wrench.

I would always get one with a certificate. I bought one without a while ago and had it tested through work shortly after buying it, they couldn't actually get it to measure the right torque!

If you want cheap but ok, look at "draper professional", or look at the 'Cromwell Tools' website. Make sure you get exactly the right bit for the screws too.

I have one of the Gehmann ones for my .22 small-bore rifle, I checked it at work on a calibrated guage and it was spot on.

I have not used this product myself, but have seen it recommended on AccurateShooter.com
If you read the reviews, make sure you read past the first one, as all the rest appear to contradict that review.

One thing to make sure of is that the driver / wrench that you get can do the range that you require, obvious I know but worth checking out.
A common question I see on forums is what is the recommended setting for this stock, or those rings. It appears that manufacturers are reluctant to say what the settings should be for their products.
