Off the shelf guns for Speed Steels

Hi All

My club does a lot of corporate guest days. We are currently hiring Ruger 10/22s off the NRA for the speed steels event. Now the guns to do this with actually cost not a lot to buy, so we are interested as a club in buying a set of semi-auto .22"s with red-dot sights and all accessories suitable to deliver a corporate steels package. Any advice / offers?

Simple 10:22, sporting stock (ambidextrous) with a x4 scope or open sight £100-£250. Beware of the large capacity plastic magazines as they can gum up with grease / lube from some ammo (S&K & some eley types have lots of waxy grease on them) also a slightly 'pokier' ammo will ensure they cycle cleanly we use Blazer. People have reported cycling problems with Geko.

Check out M&P 15's they are popular smooth and people like them, rugers can be fiddly as you know with the NRA ones always need cleaning and the M&P's should be easier to clean.

If its steels then try lasers instead of red do, again it gets the punters all excited.

If you do go for 10/22's get rid of butler creek mags and go for bx25's or TI25 mags. The only thing I would say is look at a left hooker too, maybe a G22? but I know fred got rid of the NRA ones.

Always use clean HV ammo and you should be fine. I would suggest speaking to the NRA Armour Fred for the low down on the pros and cons of each and the kind of issues he has with the NRA Rugers & M&P 15's.

Where do I get a 10/22 THAT cheap? Or is that just for the accessories?

There are normally a few 10/22s knocking around on Guntrader for that sort of money and if I wanted something like that for plinking, I'd be looking for one.

Just to echo what people above ^ have been saying, I've heard about cycling problems with less pokey ammunition, specifically hunters having problems with subsonic rounds, so maybe consider the HV stuff to make their experience a little more complete.

For the full on effect you could always go for M4 or MP5 style modifications to the stock rifles, but I suspect that one in standard form with a red dot sight would work well for customers.

I would stick with the Ruger 10/22's purely for the ease of getting after market parts. There are at least 3 on line RFD's who could probably build complete 10/22's from scratch using the spares that they carry. I doubt that with the other .22's that are on the market if you could find many spares easily and would probably have a long wait before getting the gun working again.
The only addition that I would recommend to a standard 10/22 is the magazine release lever. You can fit a custom one yourself in under 10 minutes and you need no specialist tools. On sale everywhere from ebay to RFD's these make the operation a lot simpler, less fiddly and in my eyes safer to handle.
