Hi all
I've got a few months to go before my probation is up and I can apply for my FAC but I like to be prepared :-)
I was figuring out where to mount the cabinet and the best place is a little restrictive, with about 60cm space for the cabinet and door, making most safes a little awkward.
I was wondering if it's possible to side mount a cabinet so the door can open freely?
Would it be possible to drill new mounting holes and cap the old ones off? There will be a stud wall behind the cabinet too (side mounting will be to a chimney breast).

That's great thanks for the reply. Did you just drill out new holes for the new fixing points?
Was that fairly easy, just hss bits working up in size?

Yep, i just used a small bit to get a pilot hole (4mm IIRC), then used a 10mm bit to bore it out. Once the larger hole was in i test fitted the bolts to make sure they'd pass. They all needed a little bit extra, probably opened them out to 11mm.

As a word of warning; if you're going to mount the cabinet on the side that has the hinge on (the right hand side if you're looking at the door on almost every gun cabinet), make sure that the door will be able to pass the bolts once fitted (As the cabinet door is very thick on the inside). I tested this by sticking a wad of blu-tack on the inside of the safe about the same size as the nut of the bolt and test closed the door to make sure it would have enough clearance in the position i'd chosen for the hole. I then drilled the pilot holes from the inside (awkward), but did the larger holes from the outside. Its best to have someone else with you to push against the cabinet as you have to give the drill quite a bit of pressure to cut the steel.

Excellent info guys thanks. Looks like I'll be mounting it in the hinge side, not forking out another quarter of the price to shift the hinges, that's armed robbery (heheh). At least now I can convince our lass that the location is the best available :-)
