Hello from Devon!

#1 Post by Tin Tin »

Hi all,
I live just outside Exeter.
I've been shooting airguns and shotguns since I was a child (I'm now 35) under my Grandfathers instruction and have enjoyed all aspects of both sports ever since. I have a friend in Oxfordshire who is a qualified deer stalker and it is with that in mind that I have decided to join a local club and get my FAC. I also would like to refine my abilities as a marksman over longer ranges that are just not possible with an airgun.

Does anyone have any advice or recommendations for particular clubs in Devon?
If and when I get my FAC I'd like a 26" barreled Remington 700 .308 for deer stalking, any opinions or experiences on that choice would be greatly appreciated. I'd also like a .22, but I have far less of an idea as to what make/model would be most suited to my hunting grounds and type of shooting (rabbits mainly), so again, any advice or opinions would be well received! It may be useful to add that I have decided against .17HMR despite the fact that those that own them swear by them, primarily because of the ammo costs involved.

Hope to meet some of you at a few of the local clubs soon!

Hi Tin Tin

My only knowledge of clubs in Exeter area is for pure target shooting. If you join any of these then your FAC will be for 'target shooting' only until you fulfil your FAC stalking requirements. 'Target shooting' will not allow bambi bashing.

I believe there is a strong club at Pinhoe. I seem to recall .22 only.
There is a fullbore club, 25 yd, at Denbury, Newton Abbot
There is a fullbore target club, 600 yd, at Broadhembury, Cully way

Regards contact numbers, Sportsmans Gun Centre or Middlemoor may be best? I can help with Broadhembury but let me know.

Hope this helps?

Welcome to F-B(UK)

A CZ would work well for Wabbits however you are really spoilt for choice with the number of .22LR rifles on offer at any time so it is as much down to taste and budget as anything. I read an article recently on an Anschütz that had been fitted with a different stock, heavier barrel and 'scope, it was the perfect clone of the US M24 rifle and I would certainly have found a spare corner in a cabinet for it. At the other end of the spectrum there are some good early post war repeaters with open sights if you fancy a more ethically pure approach.

Welcome

If you don't mind a bit of travelling there's several clubs that shoot at Bodmin and I know a few of my club members also shoot near Fremington (or in that area). let me know if you want further details and I'll arrange an intro.
Arming the Country, one gun at a time.

Good deals with Paul101, Charlotte the flyer, majordisorder, Charlie Muggins, among others. Thanks everybody.

Hi Mattnall

What sort of range is at Fremington?

Millpool/Bodmin is getting harder to book. We're looking for any alternatives!
