TR mirage band

After a particularly cold shoot a week or two ago I'm finally convinced that a mirage band is worth the effort. After a dozen rounds my barrel was hot enough to produce a very visible mirage through the sights that sent me all over the target. (and ruined what should have been an easy 74, allowing for an ammo-induced flyer early on :bad:)

Now, as I'm not thick enough to spend money buying a mirage band, what's the best way to go about making one? Rigid plastic or soft belt-type material? Is taping it to the barrel likely to cause problems? How do you mount it securely at each end?

Black elastic, about 1.5 inch width. Fold over at both ends and sew to create a sleeve you can pass a piece of stiff wire through. Either Form wire to attach to whatever is available front and back (e.g. foresight) or use a zip tie. Tape to barrel with black insulating tape in 2 places to avoid oscillation in the wind - try to keep it as flat as possible otherwise it won't disperse the hot air outside the sight line.
