TR mirage band

After a particularly cold shoot a week or two ago I'm finally convinced that a mirage band is worth the effort. After a dozen rounds my barrel was hot enough to produce a very visible mirage through the sights that sent me all over the target. (and ruined what should have been an easy 74, allowing for an ammo-induced flyer early on )
Now, as I'm not thick enough to spend money buying a mirage band, what's the best way to go about making one? Rigid plastic or soft belt-type material? Is taping it to the barrel likely to cause problems? How do you mount it securely at each end?
