If this topic is still visible what is the most beautiful piece of music you have ever heard?

I'm almost 42 & although my musical tastes have always been varied (Blues, Leonard Cohen, The Cure through to Thrash Metal) I've only just started to appreciate (some) classical music. (Getting older isn't as bad as I thought!)

If you ignore the Metalica covers Apocalyptica have always been an interesting fusion of classical music & heavy metal but tonight I heard their track "Farewell" for the first time & it has left me humbled by it's power & emotion. (If you've never heard it please have a listen but don't give up half way through)

What can you suggest on a similar vein that has so far passed me by?

I'm thinking that the music I enjoy very much depends on my mood at the time I listen to it. I'm pretty sure that must be the same for most of us. Therefore it would be impossible for me to have a definitive one off favourite Some of the music I enjoy in no particular order of preference.

Canteloube's Chants d'Auvergne has some beautiful passages including the justly popular Bailero.

My favourite rendition of this piece is by Kathleen Ferrier but I couldn't find it on the netty, Dame Kiri Te Kanawa gives it a certain smoothness though.

Oh dear what a self indulgent day I am having and it's all the fault of Stuck! Dromia's mention of Victoria de los Angeles (another favourite of mine) set me off again . I was thinking of all the marvelous singers I have enjoyed over the years when I came to Tenors, of course like Sopranos I was spoiled for choice If I had to pick just one it would have to be Jussi Bjorling I have a CD of his I think it is called 'The Best of Jussi Bjorling.' on it he sings Nessun Dorma twice the first time it's the full works. The second time it is after he had just sung three songs by Richard Struass accompanied by a piano, when a member of the audience shouts out Nessun Dorma and he obliges by singing it. Wonderful stuff
