A rifle for S class and tactical
I have been mulling over getting a rifle for S class but also making it suitable for some of the bolt action tactical events.
But nothing is simple with me!
I have my lovely AE3 in 260 but far too heavy for S class and certainly running around with.
I think a rifle that crosses the S class and tactical is more than feasible.
The reason I got an AE was that I couldn't get a T3 or Savage in 260 off the shelf. They were all special order.( I am sure there are other makes to look at)
I like the 6.5 bullets, very efficient for long range shooting. Its a pity more rifles aren't available in 6 x 47 too.
Ideally I would like a 10 round mag either from the factory or able to be retro fitted.
I think stainless with about a 24inch barrel. There is a new T3 in 260 with 10 round mag and it has 1 in 8 twist but only a 20 inch barrel.
Savage make a model called "16 FCSS Weather Warrior rifle" with 1in 8 twist and 22 inch barrel in 260 but only a 4 round mag. Any one know if there is an aftermarket 10 rounder for Savages? McAvoy`s have this rifle listed but I suspect it will be special order via importers so will take a year or more to arrive!
A t3 super varmint is available in 260 with a 24inch barrel but 1 in 9 twist which I think is a bit slow. And it will be a special order.
Or a t3 super varmint in 6.5 x 55 with 1 in 8 twist of which there are few used examples around.
Am I right in thinking the 10 round mag conversions will fit a super varmint?
Ideally I would like to get out to 8 or 900 yards with whatever I get.
Not fussed on the stock, standard black plastic is fine.
Where would you guys go with this?
Tony

How about getting a s/h howa in 243/308 etc, get it rebarrelled in 260 and fit the d/m system to that ? Good choice of stocks too.
Re: A rifle for S class and tactical
I run a T3 varmint in a GRS stock, in 6.5/55, certainly has the legs for 1k and ive done the 1400 etrs with mine. Only 5 shot mags, but mag changes are straight forward, would love a 10 shot mag for it though.
Re: A rifle for S class and tactical
Do a Google search for "Otterup Tactical" They are quite popular in Denmark and other Scandinavian countries. They are usually based on old S&L Target rifles or similar chambered in 6,5x55 and often single shot. They are cheap to build, clinically accurate and make a super S Class/Tactical type rifle capable of shooting to longer distances and keeping within S Class rules.
You can do the same with a variety of repeaters over here as well and get the same sort of look.

RPA General Purpose Hunter in .260, their 10 round mags will fit, got a 24" barrel, but a 1 in 9" twist.
Their Highland Stalker is available in 6.5x55 but only has 3 or 5 round mags.

In 1978 I was told by my grand dad that the secret to rifle accuracy is, a quality bullet, fired down a quality barrel..... How has that changed?

More like an exercise program to trim some of the extra weight before the race.kennyc wrote:and so the arms race begins razz

I forget to add that in this year's S-Class competition (200m-500m) the winner (by 9 points) was shooting a .222!
