I'm getting a red dot of some sort for my benelli shotgun for pratical / target work, looked at vortex sparc 2 which looks well made for the price and the shield mini red dot but i think this is too small, i think its designed as secoundary sight. I've found a brushell trophy red dot lying around will that do ? or do i need to cough up and buy an aim point or an Eotech ??

I find that for PSG, a smaller mini red dot sight works best me as I like having a clear field of view, with out the body of a bigger sight in the way. If I had the money though, an Eotech would be tempting as the 65 MOA ring would be useful for close up work and the centre dot for slug.

I prefer using a sight with a reticle with a larger outer ring and small central dot for slug (zero the sight for slug and hope the outer ring fits the birdshot pattern ) I originally had a Sightmark Ultrafire QD on my BR99 which worked fine. I upgraded a few months ago to an EOTech 516 as the were on special offer at UK Tactical (£350). Even full price they're 'only' £395, which is significantly cheaper than all other UK retailers i've come across.

Persoanlly i find plain dots hard to acquire under stress unless they're 6MOA or larger. I know you can turn up the power on smaller dots to make them appear bigger but the flare from that is rarely circular and can really throw me off. Personal preference though.

Saw the etoch 516 for £395 but is out of stock ! I think I will use the brushnell red dot I have laying about until I save up for the etoch 516 ! Not going to borther with the vortex sparc as its made in China like the brushnell

With the etoch do you get good check wield ?

Absolutely fine on a BR99, but that has a straight line stock, rather than a drop comb like a Benelli, so you might not be able to get the full cheek weld without some type of cheek riser. If you can i'd try before you buy, or at least establish whether the returns policy of where ever you buy it from covers you for that if you have to return it.

Looking at the aim point comp3 using any 30mm rings £400 also out of stock :(

The Aimpoint Micro is expensive, but works well on a shotgun.

Just stay away from anything too cheap as red dot sights take quite a pounding on a shotgun and will fail very quickly if not designed and built well.

Some Benelli users say that adding weight to the receiver can affect the inertia system and reliability, so keeping the mount and sight as light as possible will reduce the chances of this happening.

Yes i'd forgot about that issue. I put a cartridge caddy on the side of my M2's recevier and the extra weight made it FTE like buggery

I saw something on YouTube benelli USA said that as long the max weight on m2 m3 shotguns was 1 lb then it's ok . The aimpoint comp m3 is way under that
