What makes a good set of scope rings?

Why are £100+ rings better than £20 ones, if indeed they are?

I know you get what you pay for but something that is cast in metal and
mass produced is not going to differ too much in what it is expected to do
or is it?

So what are your views on what makes a good scope ring and what does not?

All about tolerances. Expensive rings will be much truer and stronger than 20 quid nasties.

I use Burris signature rings where possible, I like their insert system and also that it won't mark the scope.

I am a fan of Sportsmatch, http://www.sportsmatch-uk.com/ they are made here in the UK are of their own design instead of copies of existing products, are of superb quality and are standard issue on Accuracy International rifles as used by the MoD. I have used Sportsmatch one piece rings for years.

So it is down to the standard of the engineering?

Standard of engineering, weight, robustness and purpose all figure in the ultimate choice. For me a one piece is good in some applications and if it can be removed and fitted with absolute minimal impact on zero then all is good.

I use Sportsmatch rings good quality and certainly do the job on my rimfires . If its made in the UK all the better .

I generally use Sportsmatch too, but I have used "cheap 'n' cheerful" rings in the past and they have usually been OK, so they are often worth a try.

I ask because an older gentleman at our club was moaning about his
scope and the scope rings (I nearly said his ring then but stopped when I re-read it :roll: )
and how he wish he had got another set at almost £120.

I got to wondering if it was justified to that expense?

I'm a fan of the Burris signature rings too. The only thing I would add, is that mounting them on a rail is now my preferred approach after 40+ years of tangling with scope mounting.

As long as the rings don't damage the scope and don't move, there's no difference.
