I'll start by saying i do have slug permission on my ticket.

at my home range, I cannot use a shotgun unless it is loaded with black powder and firing a slug. a few guys use 410's there. but i want to use my 1897. now googling doesn't seem to turn up much at all, apart from just reloading standard nitro shells to blackpowder loaded shot shells. nothing really about slugs.

anyone have anything to offer? even simple like best way to crimp etc

the shotgun is fine and capable of firing nitro shotgun shells, its just i can't use them at my range, so i want to load some black powder slug rounds to use at the range, as i am allowed to use this sort....

Is guess there is an energy limit like most ranges have and a nitro fuelled slug exceeds them?

possibly yes, there is a energy limit, but i dont know what it is.... but if it was that, surely i could just download the shell and use that? But no, blanket no to nitro shells....

very weird ? I'd love to find out the reasoning because I don't think it would stand up to scrutiny !

anyway back to the original question , black powder substitutes like pyrodex load by volume like black powder , I'm pretty sure you could extrapolate some data or just use pyrodex ? you'd still get the lower performance and cloud of smoke to keep whoever came up with the range regs happy?

Black powder only, seems like a perfectly sensible rule to me.

Would it be possible to use black powder and exceed the energy limits? If not then the answer is obvious. You can tell someone shooting BP vs nitro. Rather than chrono every shot to make sure nothing slips through it makes more sense to set one, easily enforced rule. Use Nitro with a shotgun slug, get banned, Simples.
