Hi All,

I'm currently filling in the paperwork for a one-4-one variation from a CF rifle to a BP Revolver.

There appear to be a choices on calibre. .36, .44, .45, .50 etc..

Other than choosing the .36 for serious target shooting, what would you recommend and why for general range use?

With center fire I see the main issue is cost or availabilty of ammo but with BP it does not appear to be an issue as I will be rolling my own.

Very few serious target shooter use a .36. For MLAGB competitions, the calibre of choice is .44----which is still confusing, as some use a .451 ball, some a .454 and, if you want to use a revolver for the open "any sights" competitions, the Ruger Old Army uses .457.
I have won competitions with a .36 Navy Colt repro, but the 44s seem to easier to load consistently and less prone to the build up of black powder fouling.
The Remington is the more popular choice but, after 40 years or so, I settled on a Rogers and Spencer.

Fixed sights, Pedersoli Rogers & Spencer. Expensive, exclusive, but gorgeous.

Adj sights, Ruger Old Army. Built like tanks, accurate and you won't lose money on it. Personally, go for the blued version. With proper care they are no more susceptible to rusting than stainless. They will also run a little cheaper.

I just had to make the same decision, I wanted an period correct replica that I could have a casual shoot with on a Sunday morning, I held a uberti remington 1858 and the grip felt uncomfortably small.
I have now bought an Uberti 1860 army and I'm very pleased with the pistol it really is a pretty gun, I am yet to shoot it so I'm sure I will have all the cap issues and struggle for a good sight picture like all colt shooters.

All part of the fun though.

I've got a .44 Remington (Italian copy) and it's been great fun to shoot over the years. I've had it since around 1985 and used to compete regularly with it at the Bisley AD pistol shoots. My version has the adjustable sights so needed to compete in the open class.

These pistols shoot just as accurately as a modern pistol if care is taken with the loading

Saddler has a nice Uberti Remington with adjustable sights for sale.
