Pyrodex and Fillers and Wads....

I've just been reading the loading notes by Hodgdon on 777 and Pyrodex.
It says that fillers and wads over .03" should NOT be used.

Anyone know why?

Could this be that fillers and wads contain air and are therefore an unwanted airspace?
But if so, this would also be the case for BP. And everyone on our range uses a filler of some sort.

The only reasons I could find FOR using fillers was to separate lube and powder or due to cylinders getting narrower the further down you go ( which surprised me a bit ) resulting in deformation of the bullet.

All this shooting stuff is getting fascinating. :D

Triple 7 is not a black powder substitute, it's a nitro powder that you can use in muzzle loading guns. The exact loadings on the Hodgdon site are safe. The use of fillers and the like, compress the powder beyond the specs developed, which can cause dangerous pressure spikes....
