Chronograph - advice and suggestions!

I would appreciate some help and advice with selecting a chronograph to chech the consistency of my reloads etc - know very little about them - I will be shooting .308, .303 and 577/450 mostly - what should I look for, good makes and best UK supplier - thanks

Be sure the Magneto speed will fit your rifles before buying.

You may have problems with unaltered Enfields and Martini Henrys.

I bought a Shooting Chrony when they first came out (1987 IIRC). It still works fine and I'd fully recommend them.

I have two F1 Shooting Chrony units, and they have never let me down. They are reasonably priced, and very reliable as long as you know when to fit/not fit the 'sunshades!

The Skan units are supposed to be very good. Rumour has it that they are the chronos used by the police for testing - but don't quote me on that. They are more expensive than the Shooting Chrony.

A newcomer on the scene is the Caldwell chronograph. It's similar to the F1.

I've had various Chronos (incl. PACT and Chrony) over the years and used many others, I had Steinert SuperChrono for a while last year, but soon replaced it with a Magnetospeed V3.

The V3 is the most user-friendly and consistently accurate chrono I've ever used, plus it works in all conditions with no effect from light or wind, plus it gives true MV with great consistency. I've used my V3 with moderators/suppressors plus muzzle brakes to good effect. I believe the Magnetospeed Sporter is equally good, however it has a simpler control unit/display plus it can't be used with suppressors or brakes.

Has it got a universal mounting system that will fit all rifles like Enfields, Martini Henrys, M94s and such like that have muzzles a bit more complicated than just a tube?

Assuming you refer to the V3, I don't think so - I haven't yet used it on my K31 but I think it would work. It certainly won't work with rifles having very little exposed muzze such as SMLEs and No.5 Enfields, or Swedish Carbines, but it ought to be compatible with most others simply by fitting the "Bayo" to the side rather than the bottom of the muzzle.

The above is purely my own opinion, others with more experience of the V3/Military rifles may have more concrete information.

N.B. The buttons on the Magnetospeed control units are too small for the paws of certain Mustelids.
