Crown

#1 Post by top »

Hi I had the crown done on my target rifle and everything was good, then I don't know how but the end of the barrel looked like it needed doing again, so I took it back to have it done again, but this time I took it to the range and it was shooting everywhere apart from where I wanted it to, the first time I had it done the end of the barrel was flat, this time when I had it done the end was spoon shape if you know what I mean, can this affect the accuracy? or is it something else.

You can get different types of crown based on the how you use your rifle, as shown in the image link below:

Sounds like your second one was an 11 degree match crown. The crown is the most important part of your rifle (in terms of accuracy), if it was done by an incompetant gunsmith then expect your external ballistics to suffer. The crown needs to be perfect otherwise gas will be dispersed unevenly after exiting the barrel, which causes a lot of inaccuracy.

What rifle, calibre, barrel length etc. do you have? Perhaps post a picture of your crown so we can have a look at it.

I will try and take some photo's of it later when I find the camera, it does look like the 11 target one in your picture.

the 11 degree target crown is what I put on all barrels I do, but its only as good as the person and machine doing the work, some are lazy and I have seen plenty where they are done in 3 jaw lathe, later checks showed OD and bore ran out by 8 or 9 thou, more in some cases

the actual 11 degree part is great and may look good, but its the very edge of the bore thats most important, Ive seen some horrid messed up barrels, inspect the rifling just at the very end of the barrel fixed centres put in and all sorts of other weird things,

if its possible then get rounds down it and observe the pattern that appears on the muzzle, should be a perfectly even star outwards from the rifling

try running a cotton bud outwards from bore and see if its catches on any burrs or imperfections right where the rifling comes out the bore.

some good well lit macro photos will help hugely
