Calipers - Mitutoyo

#1 Post by nickb834 »

After messing about with a cheap caliper I had in the garage and getting frustrated (cheapo digital, measurements kept jumping 200 thou for no reason) I've just bought a Mitutoyo 500-171-30, brand new for 51 quid - bargain!

It's like night and day the difference, very impressed with it - whole heartedly recommend one though I'm pretty sure I've seen a few folks on here with one already.

What I was wondering is if anyone else had a model with the data port, and of so is it worth investing in the cable?

I was thinking it may come in useful if I measured a batch of bullets / boolits to just whizz thru measuring say a box of 500 and then have the data captured automatically? (it'd be great if my scales did the same.....hmmmm, arduino project?)

To be honest I might well be over egging the pudding given I'm only reloading lead - not too sure if I'll reload 54R or 7.62Nato, at least not soon.

Of course, you are aware, that there are zillions of fake Mitutoyo calipers out there on the bay!! ;)

I have a Mitutoyo 500-191 caliper. Bought it in 2004 for £79 at Buck & Ryan, served me well all these years.

Haha yeah - don't you worry, this one is legit!

The cr4ppy one I had in the garage was a knockoff :-)

Fwiw this is what I checked:

The lock screw is of the correct size (small)
Measures to 4 decimal places in inches
Battery is actually an SR44
The serial matches that printed on the inspection cert
The outer box has the correct orientation of the 3 models (jaws to top)
Has the correct conformity markings on the plastic case
Correct marking on rear of caliper where lock screw is threaded in

So I'm happy with it's authenticity.

I got a Hornady lnl sonic cleaner (2l version with the red front bezel) for 54 quid brand new from Amazon on Saturday too - which I make to be about half price, been quite lucky lately - I should get a lottery ticket!

I couldn't agree more, I wish I hadn't tried to cut corners in the first place, it's a tool you can rely on.

I try to stick to the mantra "buy cheap, buy twice", though this doesn't necessarily mean price.

For example, on Saturday I went to purchase a DS-750 Frankford Arsenal Scale, but Kranks was out of stock - I had the option of the Lee Balance scale, the Smart Reloader digital scale (cheap horrible cr4p) or the Frankford Arsenal DS1500 Platinum series scale.

I discounted the Lee scale (circa 25 quid IIRC) as balance scales are a little too slow for my liking, and in practice I'm not convinced that I can accurately determine the position of the needle.

The Smart Reloader scale was easy to reject - cheapest nastiest piece of plastic I've ever had in my hand (including what I may or may not find under the wife's pillow aaarggh )

The DS1500 was 4 times the price of the Lee, 3 times the cost of the Smart Reloader but is significantly better made with a clear bright display I can read in any light conditions. It weighs consistently accurate measures and works quickly so I'm really happy with it. I can't say it's better than the DS750 - and I won't be loading anything with an all up weight of 1500 gr's any time soon , so maybe the DS750 would have sufficed.

Hopefully time will bear out that I didn't buy cheap, but as it stands I hear good things about both my measuring devices.

Buying quality is usually worth it, perhaps you should treat your wife to something nicer... :)

As long as you use the calibration weights to check for drift, it should be fine!

Having had a cheap pair of digital calipers I've had much more luck with a cheapish pair of dial calipers.

Yeah I thought about dial calipers, but my eyesight is terrible for close up - the digital makes it easier for me to see.
