Just checked over my 500 and it looks as if the hand guard (pump) is loose and needs tightening. The only issue is most tools look like a tube and go over the hand guard once the barrel is removed, I have a full rail and this would be a massive pain to do.
So does anyone know of a tool that looks more like an open wrench that can be used while everything is still on the shotgun?
Thanks
Rob

Re: Mossberg 500 hand guard tool
You still need to remove the barrel, but there is a widely available tool to tighten/loosen the forend nut.
Re: Mossberg 500 hand guard tool
I use a long flat tipped screwdriver
Get it on the edge of one of the slots & slowly tap it round
My 870 has not needed tightening for a while & I'm always swapping out the front grips

My old 500 I needed the tool, ended up removing the forend and needed the receiver in a vice to hold it. A bit rusty it was.
Make sure you wrap the mag tube with tape to avoid marking it. made no difference on mine, had been rattle can painted in a Rhodie camo pattern by some old When-we.
