M4 Carbine in slow mo.

#1 Post by Chuck »

The intense punch of the M4 makes the weapon hard to aim and stabilize without proper training and form.

The Marine Corps adopted a new 62-grain, 5.56×45 mm Special Operations Science and Technology round. The SOST round is designed to perform out of barrels as short as 10.5 inches, so the M4 has no difficulty shooting out to the extreme end of effective range, negating the advantage of the long M16A4 barrel.

I like the SOST round (Mk 318 Mod 0). It beats the heck out of the standard SS109 NATO round, and I would use it in preference to the Army's M855A1 any day. Enhanced performance, barrier blind, temperature stable propellant and 2 MOA at 600 metres. What's not to like?

I admit that I haven't been able to get hold of any of this yet for testing. That's a project for this coming year.

It's actually listed in the US catalogue as an OTM (Open Tip Match) round. The 2 MOA is from testing with M4 carbines at Naval Sea Systems - taken from official reports. However the guy that developed the round and I are long-time correspondents, and I have always found his information to be spot-on in the past. No reason to believe that it is not in this case.

I'll pass your comment along to my friend who developed it to see what he can offer by way of proof.
