Most were single shot but I've seen a few that had magazines.

The P-H M82 was the militarised sniper variant of the 1200TX fitted with a scope sight (but also with the option of the TX's iron target sights in QD form for reversion to a target model). It didn't use the 10-round Enfield or Sterling magazine though having reverted to an internal box mag as per P-H sporters and military M1893-98 Mausers. I don't think the M82 was ever offered to the domestic civilian shooting market, although I'm sure a few made it. Canada and Australia adopted this rifle as their sniper models. Canadian shooters are mad on their C3 model and its later updated variant. There have been a fair number of secondhand 1200TXs exported from here to Canada where many are rebuilt as C3s / C3A1s to meet this interest.

AFAIK, no P-H models of this era pre the final M85 / M86 models which use later model heavier receivers were fitted with a detachable magazine, the M85 using the US M14 rifle mag and the M86 a long P-H design single stack box in 5 and 10-round configurations (long as the rifle was designed to accomodate the .300 Win Mag as well as 308 length cartridges). The Canadian Army upgraded its C3 with a new scope, stock, bottom metal, and a detachable 6-round single-stack magazine, redesignated C3A1.

The only other domestic 7.62 rifles factory fitted with detachable magazines were the No.4 Rifle based Enfield 'Enforcer' and L42A1 police and military rifles both fitted with 10-round double-stack types. Other target orientated Enfields ('Envoy' and L39A1) retained a 303 box mag solely for use as a loading platform. They also lacked the necessary machining to the underside of the magazine well on the receiver walls that are essential for reliable 7.62 / 308 feeding, or even for any feeding, at all as many have discovered.

Sorry have to say your quote about the Envoy is not true, having owned such a rifle. We bought a 1971 Envoy from the family of the original owner it had a matching serial numbered 7.62x51 Enfield mag which cycled perfectly, and a new spare. Also seen L39A1's with 7.62x51 mags fitted see here, http://www.highwoodclassicarms.co.uk/Fi ... /no4al.htm some even were fitted with Sterling mags again 7.62 and worked well.

What owners do to their rifles doesn't change the maker's specification. Many people have fitted 7.62 mags to formerly single-shot Enfield TR rifles. If you're lucky they feed satisfactorily, but many won't. Factory heavy-barrel 7.62 repeater conversions had some machining done to the underside of the receiver so the new magazine provided correct alignment for the cartridges, but it seems that even when this was done, some L42A1s still wouldn't work 100% reliably. Unit armourers then custom modified that rifle's magazine box to suit the individual rifle body, and the rifle's serial number was stamped onto the magazine casing.

As your Envoy had serial number stamped magazines, it had obviously undergone modification(s) at some stage.

Thanks for the information, but it goes on about the L8 & L42 nothing about the Envoy.

The Envoy was not a military rifle, it was sold only on the civi market, thats why I made comment about your original post.

All Envoys were new build rifles on new actions. They were all supplied with a 7.62 magazine serial numbered to the rifle. They were not supplied with a .303 magazine.
There are quite a few fake Envoys out there and are easily identified because the serial number is not in the correct format of E***, the * representing a numeral. And they don't have Envoy engraved on the left hand side of the receiver. There were less than 1000 ever made.

Someone showed me a photo of a pair of the PH sniper rifles all boxed in their original transit chests etc.

I must admit they looked cracking with a hint of L96 about them.
