Shotgun Sight: Red Dot vs Ironsight

Hey all!

I was considering getting a sight for my Mossberg 500. Currently it has just a bead at the front and it can be terrible sometimes, especially in low light conditions (especially in Wales, when that is the case on most days).

What I wanted to know is if anyone here had had any experience with red dots/sights on their shotgun, and which ones work well. Naturally the recoil from the shotgun reduced the choices I have.

What would be better on the shotgun, a decent set of iron sights or a red dot etc?

Many thanks and be kind! Haha

Well, I'm guessing you're talking about PSG?

Shotguns in general aren't shot like rifles (a lot of people will default to this when they struggle) with one eye closed - instead both eyes open and mounting the gun the same each time (assuming it fits you properly) and focusing on the clay / plate and NOT the bead is the usual order of the day.

That said, I've just put an EOTech on my Bora99 (Has an FP lower also) as no other sighting system for an AR15alike shotgun seemed to make sense to me - just didn't feel right using anything other than some kind of red dot.

Vortex Strikefires are a popular choice.

Whatever you go for I think iron sights would be the worst choice - go for some kind of red dot IMHO.

PSG means quick target acquisition, so when I eventually buy a Vepr-12 I'll be bunging a red dot on top.

An Easy-hit type bead might be the best choice as putting a red dot on any type of shotgun bumps you into Open division for PSG comps. If you're just using it for informal stuff where you don't get separated into divisions it's not an issue though.

I'd stay away from iron sights/ghost sights unless you're well versed in using them

I had this same issue with a Burris red dot on a BR99 and solved it with a 30MOA rail from Brownells.
