The peace is only partial, however. The huntsmen’s code of conduct includes taking the numbers and reporting any vehicles used by ‘activists’ that cause any problems. Activists engaged in provocative behaviour can be filmed and reported to the National Trust.

For their part the hunt saboteurs pledge that if they see hounds in pursuit of a fox they will “endeavour to get between them” in order to assist the animal’s escape. And they too pledge to gather evidence of any alleged wrongdoing by hunt members and supporters.

But the saboteurs also undertake “not to use our mode of transport as a weapon or threaten, shout and scream or hit people with sticks.”
