I believe the Viet-Cong (which is the name given by Western sources to the National Liberation Front during the Vietnam War) were in a different league compared to ISIS, they were fighting on their own turf and and consisted of both irregular forces and regular army units.There goal was political and not driven by a warped version of a religion.

Funnily enough the same way that the US are proping-up, for their own interests, the islamist terrorists against the legitimate Ba'athist government of Bashar al-Assad and saw Ossama Bin Laden as a tool to get at the Soviets, they initially proped up Ho Chi Minh against the French with the results we know, ie : over a million deaths including 60,000 of their own and 3 countries wrecked .
