After one of the above, cheap (ish) for plinking, have considered Chiappa Mfour, H&K 416 etc.
Anyone?

If you can hold out, get a s&w 15-22, these are the cheapest decent guns in this line of things IMHO.

Seen a British made Bremmer for under £400 online.
Great guns & full AR-spec so accept all after-market accessories & can be upgraded to centre fire straight pull uppers in due course.

They've now added photos. It's a copy of the M16A2.
Almost tempted myself to go with my Bremmer M4 repro.

Donaldsons always seem fairly priced.
I had no idea about Bremmer until I did a bit of reading, fascinating. I understand they bought the rifle part of Parker Hale but only managed a few years before winding up about 15yrs ago.
People seem to like the Bremmer - flies under the radar a bit.

Do they have a proprietary magazine though or can they take Black Dog etc?

No but when I first searched I had loads of hits referring to the Coat of Arms of the City of Bremen due to a typo, goldfish moment!

I remember Bremmer having a stand at the Phoenix meeting one year .
The staff marched in like the Salvation Army band was leading them . When they got behind the stand they all stood to attention while the boss man gave instructions .
More than a few of their M16's had Norinco bottom ends . And their Springfield rifles had been festering in a foreign country for at least 50 years .

A mate near me has a Bremmer polo shirt.
Sadly he wears it for oil changes & welding, so it's beyond ruined.
