Hi all,

Just saying hello. I live in south Essex and have recently joined my local club with my teenage son as a fun new hobby/sport we can do together. Both of us are total novice shooters but really enjoying it so far. The club guys have been great, very welcoming, patient and happy to let us try their guns but I'm itching to get my own already.

I'm obviously still learning and trying out as much as I can but on first impressions I've enjoyed shooting gallery rifles off hand more than the prone target rifles. I love the classic look of the CZ guns but have not had a chance to shoot one yet. If they are as nice to shoot as they look I can see me being a CZ fan boy. One of The club guys brought a 'tactical' .22 down, a S&W I think, and was kind enough to let us have a go, which was great fun. So I'd like to give practical shooting a go at some point. I doubt I will go down the straight pull AR route just yet but never say never. I'm quite a history geek as well, so the black powder revolvers, lever action 'cowboy' rifles and WW2 bolt actions all have an appeal. So far we have only shot .22s but I'd like to try something with some more kick.

I think I will mostly be into target shooting rather than hunting but I've never been hunting, so I'm not totally ruling it out. My son is keen to try hunting. I'd definitely like to do some shooting outside though, at steel if safe, and 'tin can' plinking has to done at some point.

Cheers.

Trev

Hi Trev welcome to the forum, in general I have found shooters to be some of the friendliest folks you'll find.

Lots of helpful advise available so don't be afraid to ask.

Alan

Welcome to the forum! You sound similar to myself, I really like my CZ 452 and CZ 527 in .223, they are great value for money and very nice shooters - could always have "one more CZ". The one caveat with them is scope mounting.

1. With the CZ 527 I needed the highest rings I could get to make sure the occular eye piece is not hit by the bolt when extracting;
2. The comb height is low, so you will need a cheek riser of some form to get a comfortable cheek weld.

I also have a Yugo Mauser, Lee Enfield and a Marlin 1894 cowboy gun and I can tell you that you'll get hooked! Congrats on getting your boy on board too; he can get a part time job and pay towards the ammo!

Welcome to the forum.

A CZ bolt action rimfire would be my choice of first rifle if I was to start again and I would expect to be still shooting it to this day!

Take a look at classic military centrefire rifles as well, everyone should own and shoot a .303 or 7,62x65R or 8x57 at some point.

Thanks for the welcome all. My lad didn't need much encouragement he's chuffed he has a "cool" hobby now. I may regret it later when I have an empty wallet, two full gun safes and a pile of spent brass.

The Mrs is pretty understanding but I think I'll try to pace myself. Top of the list will probably be a semi-auto and a bolt action .22. Then probably an old service rifle. After that who knows? I expect I'll have changed my mind a hundred times before I get to that dilemma.
