Protecting woodwork from flash

Hi

my PH booklet suggests protecting the wood from the flash of the percussion cap by using tape. I see that Kranks sell a brass thingy aimed at doing the same. Does anyone bother with this, or does it just add character to the gun?

it isn't just a matter of protecting the wood. With a P53/6/8/etc Enfield, the flash from the top-hat cap travels down the right hand side of the gun an burns the top of your trigger finger. The usual solution is a 2" disc of sheet brass, formed into a cup and fitted under the nipple. No doubt, this is what Kranks are selling.
