A-TEC A12

Some good news, A-TEC will be releasing a 12g moderator at the end of the summer according to Jackson Rifles.
It is called the A12 and will attach by means of the choke thread.
Hope they make one that I can put on my BR99. If I remember correctly the Bora uses chokes that are compatible with Winchester shotguns.

Me wants!

Yes and finally a reason to buy a lever action shotgun, so it can be chopped to around 16" and then add the mod.

I wonder if the mod will affect the gas system on a semi auto ?

That would be nice on a chopped barrel, not sure about on the end of a 24" one though!

Got a message from A-TEC about the current choke thread compatibility. These are the ones they are expecting to match first:

- Crio plus
- Mobilchoke
- Optima HP
- Invector
- Invector Plus
- Rem 870

Anyone know if the Invector Plus goes on a BR99?

Yep, it will be for giggles mainly!

These have arrived in the country. Check with Jackson Rifles.
This is mine:

Not properly tested yet, just fired a limited number of rounds down at the club. The weight is noticeable on the end of the barrel since it weighs 630g and extends 300mm.
Folks standing behind me said the moderator took the report down about 20% but that was using Lyalvale Express English Sporter 2.75" cartridges with number 7.5 shot with a 28g payload.
Also, that BR99 is not ideal for a moderator because you get noise out of the action.
I'm going to see if I can get a single shot or a pump action to test.

The moderator attaches to the gun via an A-TEC choke tube adapter, seen here:

You insert the choke into the barrel as usual. Then you thread the moderator onto the other side of the choke and snug up the castle nut to keep it secure. The choke I got is the Browning Invector (not the Invector Plus!) which is also the old WIN pattern and which fits the BR99. I'm told it will also fit some Mossberg shotguns.
For anything else, I would have to buy the appropriate choke from A-TEC.

Here's the box contents:

You get the moderator, a choke key, a castle spanner and a choke adapter.

Oh, another thing to be aware of: you cannot use slugs in this moderator. It will damage the device.

The supplied A-TEC choke is modified, which is the same choke I was using on the BR99 in the first place.
It's not really a clay gun and I'm not a good clay shooter but I got 10 out of 20 birds on Sunday. It seemed to cycle okay. I had two feed failures but in both cases the bolt had come all the way back and stripped a cartridge fully from the magazine. The cartridge had hung up on the 3 o'clock edge of the chamber.

If point of impact is different it is not markedly so. I'd like to do some stationary target tests with and without the moderator to see how the POI changes.
Certainly on the .22 moderators I have, there is a drop in POI even at 25 yards. That's the subject of a different experiment I am doing. That's what happens when you have 14 moderators!
