Gents,

Is it possible to buy/load/make .45 Gatlin?

I have access to a Gatlin gun, still in its original caliber, and it's owners are interested in firing it.

I'd have thought once you have live ammunition then you would be flouting the exemption for Antique Firearms within the Firearms Act 1968

Government guidence notes on the matter are pretty unambiguous:
"Note (i) – The exemption does not apply to ammunition, and the possession of live ammunition suitable for use with an otherwise antique firearm will normally indicate that the firearm is not possessed as a curio or ornament."

I'm not sure whether the action on a Gatling counts as semi-automatic or fully automatic but either way with live ammunition it would be viewed as section 5.

It's an interesting discussion with regards to if a gatlin gun is Sect 1 or Sect 5. I believe the only way a definitive answer could be gained is through a case being brought to court. Not something I have the pockets or balls to do. Thankfully I have Sect 5 authority and therefore will have no issues staying on the right side of the law if we fire the gun.

Nope, It's a British gun. I believe that gun was brought by and American buyer and is now over there.

Interesting, I know of one in the UK that was test fired only 3-4 weeks ago.

What caliber was it?

It is an interesting discussion that occurred to me last week when I was at Leeds armouries. Now we have actions like lever release and MARS on sec 1, that need an extra imput from the firmer to chamber the next round then why wouldn't a Gatling be classified similarly as it needs constant input from the firer to load, fire, eject and reload each chamber through the turning of the crank? Thus proving it's not automatic, or even semi automatic, as the firer provides the impetus for operating a 100% manual action.

Gatling guns do not self-load and are not pump-action and are therefore not caught by Section 5 (ab) and they 1/ don't have a conventional trigger and 2/ even if the firing mechanism is classed as the trigger they do not fire two or more rounds with a single press so are not caught by Section 5 (a).

100% Section 1 IMHO. You've just got to find someone rich enough to feed one that isn't .22lr!
