Evening all.

I’m looking for a second-hand .308 / 7.62x51 bolt action rifle. It’s for scoped informal target shooting at 100/300/600yds (ie no fixed competition discipline).

Ideally it should:

• Allow fitment of a scope without obtuse receiver side mounts
  Not require a new barrel
  (Optionally) have a detachable magazine for which spares are readily and reasonably available
  Be reasonably priced
  Be relatively accurate if I play my part and feed it a preferred load
  Be either close to North East England / Yorkshire or RFDable

There are lots of shiny spangly rifles available from new but as it’s my first centrefire target rifle I would rather spend modestly and put the rest towards ammunition and improving my shooting.

So...anyone got anything or know of a dealer with anything suitable?

For the purposes of budget let’s assume...up to £600-700 but with more available for a compelling offering. Sadly not enough available for the lovely chassis Tikka recently posted :)

Les in Guisborough has a .308 for sale on his web site have a word with him he gets stuff in all the time.

Have you taken the time to make friends with your local gun shops?

All my guns interesting guns have come from mine..

Why not put up a wanted add on the clubs notice board or ask one of the committee members to post a wanted add for you.

For that kind of money you can nearly afford a new Howa 308 with Varmint barrel and the GRS Beserker stock (£795 on Guntrader). Or there's a slightly used Howa 308 Varmint action for £275 which gives you plenty of wriggle-room for a stock & scope.

Several members of my club have the Howa/GRS rifle and are 'very pleased' with them. We will be shooting them out to 1000 on Stickledown this weekend.
