Hi all

I've started doing some research into what rifles I would like to buy once my FAC comes through and I'm after a bit of help please.

A lot of my shooting will be on an indoor 25 meters range initially and with this in mind I'm thinking of the CZ455 as a bolt action .22 for targets / plinking. I dont have masses to spend so I also want a rifle that will be able to shoot accurately out to further ranges and the CZ455 seems to fit that bill too. I've seen some youtube videos of guys (mainly in the US) using either the Tacticool model or the Precision Trainer model. The Tacticool only seems to be available from czrifles.co.uk (and even then you have to contact them for a price whicj makes me wonder if they are available). The Precision Trainer model doesnt seem to be available in the UK at all.

Can anyone shed any light on these models being so hard to find? Were they US specific models or special runs? Despite using my Google skills I havent been able to get any info.

Having had a look, the tacticool appears to be a Varmint (heavy) barrelled 455 in a black ‘tactical’ stock with a picatinny/weaver base. If you’re desperate for that particular configuration you could always buy a new 455 Varmint (£400), add a Boyds Pro Varmint stock in black (£195) and a scope base (£48). Add a trigger kit (£15) and the optic of your choice and you’re good to go.

...or ask Roger at rimfiremagic (SYSS) to put one together for you as I believe he carries all the above from stock :)

As a new FAC holder myself – just a month ago – bear in mind most posters have forgotten more about rifles and shooting than I know! That said, I too was attracted by a CZ455, did lots of research and came across both models you mention.

So far as I could tell, the Precision Trainer model came with a 20.5” barrel while the Tacticool had a shorter, heavier and threaded barrel with a coated, laminate wood stock rather than the more expensive fibreglass and carbon fibre stock of the Precision Trainer.

I couldn’t find the Precision Trainer available in the UK when I was researching and couldn’t see any benefits to it unless you particularly liked the look. While the Tacticool did appear to be available, with no price on the website and “..available to order..” I didn’t bother looking into it any further as an easily available 455 Varmint would do exactly the same job and if I hated the stock it could always be changed at a later date.

So, I opted for a Varmint barelled 455 through which I’ve put about 400 rounds, mainly on 25 and 50 metre ranges but hoping to try out at 100 metres in the next week or two.

Obviously, as a beginner new to the sport, the rifle can shoot better than me in any case but having experimented with various brands of ammunition and with helpful advice from club members I’m becoming more consistent and finding the CZ very rewarding to shoot.

The only negative I’ve found in my choice – and to be fair, this was pointed out to me before I bought – is that while a heavy varmint barrel is good for bench rest, it’s definitely not the best for offhand shooting should that be something in which you’re interested.

I’m not aware that the VPT was ever offered in the UK, which is a bit of a shame, as it is a cracking rifle.
