When shooting 22 benchrest ,I use a converted car jack for front elevation and a sandbag and wood block for rear rest ,some say you have to raise the butt of bag. before you shoot , I know there are different rules for different league but is there a general rule I could consider , I am getting very good results with the system I am using just. plinking but don't want to get used to a setup and then have to change,if I wanted to enter competition ..

The rules vary considerably from one shooting body to another
The NSRA rules are IMHO rubbish and rear rests are not permitted.
The best are those for UKBR22 (based on International rules) - but can be very costly. My front rest cost nearly £400 second hand and rear bags ain't cheap either.
The more competitive you get, the more it costs.

All of the competitions are different. Such is the way of our sport :)

As an example, the Yorkshire postal league (very popular, not just for those in God’s own county) is another ‘no rear rest’ and simplified front rest League - rules are here:

Pretty similar. Yorkshire doesn’t allow sandbag fronts and the cards/scoring are different. Yorkshire is the better supported of the two.

I would like to get into .22 bench rest at my age it makes sense. I don't do prone well that's not strictly true I don't mind shooting prone if they are prepared to shut the firing point down so four of the younger guys who dont dont mind wasting shooting time try to get me back up onto my feet.
So where do I go to buy stuff for .22 bench rest.

Thanks I suspected the rules were funny about supporting the but of rifle ,I think there are areas that could lead to confusion which is a bit of a shame as this discipline is an option for people of all abilities.
Personally if I place my hand under the butt I always get a heartbeat on target.
Using Winchester 54d and 30x fixed baush and lumb .

Go to Scotarms auction and pick up an Anschutz 54 (NOT the 64) and then buy or make or modify the stock - read the UKBR22 rules.
Get yourself a good 36x scope (Weaver T36 is what I use) and good scope mounts
Join the UKBR22 (£15 per year and pay by PayPal) and go on their forum and start chatting to the folks on there.
Go to a club where they shoot benchrest SERIOUSLY and talk to the top shooters.

I literally just sold my 1813 Anschutz in a parmoor BR stock with a Falcon T35 atop a contessa rail... for way too cheap, obviously. That would have been a decent starter setup - as dodgyrog says for the money (and availability) the Anschutz is hard to beat.

If you want to try it out before you commit, you can get forend plates to ride a rest so you can convert a rifle you have to see if it’s for you. I’m in the process of setting my Feinwerkbau up as a BR gun so will bring it down once that’s complete.
